Sexual Assault at The RIU

In this review, Tay describes a horrifying experience at a RIU resort, where she was sexually assaulted by a security guard after being locked out of her room and waiting alone while her boyfriend went to get a new key. The guard initially appeared helpful, offering her a towel before forcibly dragging her into a maintenance room and assaulting her. Tay managed to escape and return to her room, but the guard followed her. When her boyfriend opened the door, he found the guard eavesdropping, and after confronting him, the staff member violently attacked her boyfriend, threatening to kill him.

The situation escalated when other RIU staff joined in the violence, allegedly assaulting both Tay and her boyfriend in front of witnesses. Tay says the staff lied to the police, withheld their phones, and manipulated her statements during the police report. The resort refused to identify the attacker or provide security footage, and Tay reported that their room was later ransacked with items missing. She has since filed a formal complaint with the Women’s Center for Justice and warns others not to stay at RIU resorts, especially with loved ones, citing the resort’s refusal to take responsibility or protect guests.
