Kris L. reports that she was raped by a security guard on the grounds of an Iberostar hotel on October 19. After her room key was deactivated, she asked a guard for help navigating the dark property. Instead of assisting her, he led her into a secluded area and sexually assaulted her. She immediately fled to the hotel lobby, crying and shouting for help, but the hotel security team refused to call the police or even document the incident. The next morning, a female staff member contacted the U.S. Consulate, and Kris was given legal options under Mexican law. Emotionally overwhelmed and alone, she decided to return home.
Despite assurances that a photo lineup would be sent to help identify the assailant, Iberostar ceased communication once she returned to the U.S. They referred her case to their insurance company and refused to cooperate with local authorities. Kris later returned to Mexico to file a formal declaration, but according to the U.S. Consulate, the hotel still declined to assist investigators. She shares her story publicly because Iberostar has not removed the alleged rapist from the property and has refused to take any meaningful action to protect future guests.
